Does creatine brand matter? Short answer: the name on the tub does not change what creatine does. Across 143 randomized trials, creatine monohydrate did the same job whatever product the researchers used. That part of the "brand doesn't matter" argument is right.

What the trials cannot tell you is whether your tub holds what they used. Every trial used verified material at a known dose; nobody has verified yours unless the company did. That is where products differ: how much creatine is really in a serving, what came with it from the factory, and whether it dissolves well enough that you keep taking it. This guide is how to tell, in about a minute.

If creatine has upset your stomach before, you might have blamed the ingredient. But the real culprit is often the product: poorly micronized powder, inconsistent purity, or manufacturing that prioritizes cost over quality. The difference between a creatine that dissolves cleanly and one that leaves grit at the bottom of your glass isn't trivial. For women in midlife, it can mean the difference between results and giving up.

The global creatine supply chain includes facilities operating under different regulatory frameworks, testing protocols, and quality benchmarks. Does Creatine Brand Matter? What 143 Trials Can and Cannot Tell You

The meta-analysis behind the "brand doesn't matter" argument is real and worth reading. Pashayee-Khamene and colleagues, writing in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition in 2024, pooled 143 randomized controlled trials. Creatine added 0.82 kg of fat-free mass and trimmed body fat by 0.28 percentage points, and the between-study variation, the number the "zero variability" headlines are quoting, came out at zero. In plain English, the trials did not disagree with each other.

What the Trials Tested

Every trial compared creatine to a placebo. Brand was not a variable: the paper does not analyse brand, purity or manufacturer at all, and its only product split is monohydrate versus other forms. That zero says the creatine-versus-placebo effect was the same from study to study. It says nothing about a tub that was never in a study, or one that holds less creatine than its label claims, because a trial's design relies on a verified dose.

So the fair reading is narrower than the headline: when the powder is real creatine monohydrate at a real dose, the name on the tub does not change the result. We agree. We will never tell you a premium creatine builds more muscle than a cheap one.

Where the Differences Actually Live

The variation is in what is in the tub, and three sets of lab results show it:

  • By-products from the factory. Moret and colleagues ran 33 commercial creatine supplements through HPLC in 2011: creatinine exceeded 100 mg/kg in 44% of samples, and about 15% carried dicyandiamide above 50 mg/kg and detectable dihydrotriazine. Those track with how the creatine was made, not with the label.
  • Dose accuracy. In 2024 the supplement maker NOW Foods tested twelve creatine gummies by HPLC and six failed their label claim, several with much of the creatine already degraded to creatinine. A 2025 test by the supplement-rating platform SuppCo failed four of six gummies, two with only trace creatine, while all five powders in the same test passed at 98 to 101% of label.
  • Form. Escalante and colleagues catalogued 175 creatine products on Amazon in 2022. About 88% of the alternative forms (HCl, buffered, ethyl ester) had limited or no evidence for their claims, at roughly twice the price per gram of plain monohydrate, which the 2024 meta-analysis calls well-studied (89 trials) and economical.

Put those together and the rule is simple. Brand does not matter. Verification does. A plain monohydrate powder with a certificate of analysis is a good buy at any price. A designer tub with no paperwork is not a better one. The rest of this guide is how to tell the two apart.

More recent reviews have found no causal link between creatine and hair loss in any population.
